Hey Closetbox Friends,
The last you heard from me it was spring cleaning time. If you missed it you can check it out here. Basically, all of life’s stages had our garage, and every closet of our home, packed to the brim. We’re talking about my husband’s bachelor pad “art work”, my old everything from my first condo, all of the baby gear, and the list goes on.
So what did we do with all that junk?
Well, I guess my husband’s favorite paintings aren’t junk. In fact, they are very meaningful to him but they don’t necessarily have a place in our home. And since we are done having children for the foreseeable future it would seem that we could have let go of a lot of things, but alas so many of those things had sentimental value. So the not-so-junky-junk is in storage.
Actually most, if not all, of our stuff is in storage. To make a really long story short, we were in another state for a work contract my husband took on and it ended up not working out. We did like where we were but then the pandemic hit, and it changed a lot of things for us. Maybe you can relate. The whole experience brought us back to our home state without a place to live right away which brings me to my next story:
Living with the in-laws.
Although it’s a short stint here, I have to be totally honest that it’s a total struggle fest primarily because my husband and I are meticulous folks. My in-laws are totally opposite from us. Well mostly my mother-in-law. She is a (partially) self-proclaimed hoarder. And not in the joking sense like, “oh my gosh, why do you have so many rubber bands in your junk drawer?” It’s more like, “oh my gosh, why can’t I open a single cabinet, closet, or room without being pummeled by STUFF?” My husband literally mutters “WTF” under his breath.
My mother-in-law, wonderful woman that she is, has graciously agreed to attempt to de-clutter her home and I have graciously volunteered to help. If you’re curious about what it means to be a hoarder, the team here at Closetbox has written a great introductory article about it here (How to Deal with a Hoarding Spouse). I personally feel like I will revisit this article, but I’d love to hear from you! Are you living with a hoarder? What are some of your strategies to help the hoarders in your life?
For me, the first step is making a list. Wanna see my list? You can download it here!
Until next time folks,
Kerry Closetbox
